Photography Workshop:
Death Valley

Death Valley By Night (mostly)

Mar 3-6, 2017

There is nothing like creating images in one of the world's most dynamic locations. Add the element of night and you will have images and memories you will want to share with your friends and family for a lifetime. Join me and nine other photographers of all skill levels for a look at Death Valley National Park like most will never see it!

Workshop At A Glance

Three Nights of Shooting

This During this workshop you will gain experience with night landscape photography in all its forms. You will learn how the moon phase effects your imagery and how to use that to your advantage along with how to create a star trail in camera. We will also develop your ability to paint with light, using your own light sources to influence some or all of the image.  We'll cover this the first night so you can try it during the rest of the trip if you like. The curriculum is planned out in a manner so by the end of the trip you have the ability to head out on your own and take advantage of this unique style of shooting.

Despite this being primarily a night photography workshop, we do get out for two sunsets to practice daytime landscape techniques including using graduated neutral density filters to balance light within the camera.

The locations we visit are all close to parking lots (at most about 1 mile round trip during dunes).

Two Daytime Edit and Critique Sessions

After our first night of shooting, we will meet in the air conditioned "Boardroom" at the Inn at Furnace Creek. This gives us a chance to duck the hottest part of the day and also see what we shot the first night. Everyone will bring in an image or two from the night before that we will edit in Lightroom to give you a feel for my post production routine. By going over the images from the first night, everyone will have a better idea of what to work on the following nights to truly improve their photography. Before we part ways we will have a second of these sessions to see progress and also give important further instruction to take away with you.
